Pregnant women urged to access antenatal care regularly | 13th March, 2017

Mr Edward Bentil, the Executive Director of Maternal Health Foundation, has called on pregnant women to visit the healthcare centres regularly to access antenatal care services.

He said accessing antenatal care was a major means of reducing maternal mortality in the country and ensure good health of the mother and faetus.

Mr Bentil made the call at the end of a health walk in Accra organised by the Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation which ensures good health for women, especially pregnant women.

The walk, which was on the theme: “Walk for Life,” started from the premises of the Airport Women’s Hospital through the Shangri-La Hotel to the 37 Military Hospital and back to the Airport Women’s Hospital. Mr Bentil said the walk was to promote exercise during pregnancy and also to solicit funds for some selected hospitals.

“We go to hospitals to support them with funds and also support the hospitals to carry out research works,” he said.

Mr Bentil advised pregnant women to desist from taking kaolin and alcohol which, he said, could lead to anaemia and deformities.

Mr Simon Narh, the General Manager of the Airport Women’s Hospital, urged Ghanaians to discard the notion that pregnant women were exempted from doing hard work saying; “it is rather when you are pregnant that you have to do hard work to ensure safe delivery.”

He advised pregnant women to also visit the clinic every month and also desist from self-medication.

The walk was sponsored by Cherry Youghort, Access Bank, UTV, Peace FM Special Ice Mineral Water, Airport Women’s Hospital and Kube Package.
