DCE declares war against teenage pregnancy | 15th June, 2017

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Tain in the Brong Ahafo region, Lawyer Charity Akua Foriwaa Dwommoh has called on all stakeholders especially those in educational and health institutions to pay crucial attention to the issue of teenage pregnancy by providing adequate education and services for adolescents in the area.

She observed that lack of necessary education and services for adolescents with regards to early pregnancies had led to many of them to drop out of school without acquiring at least a Junior High School (JHS) certificate.

She bemoaned the fact that pupils who were tipped to succeed in their education ended up as drop outs due to teenage pregnancy.  The DCE, insisted that this situation could have been averted if the “the girl child” was provided with the necessary information about the possibility and risk involved in becoming pregnant at a tender age.

Lawyer Foriwaa Dwommoh who made these comments in an exclusive interview with Ghanadistricts.com on her plans to reduce teenage pregnancy as she assumes office as the Presidents representative in the district said that intensive programmes will soon be outlined by the assembly in collaboration with the District Health Directorate (DHD) to help educate adolescents particularly in schools as part of efforts to lessen the current status-quo.

She added that the programme will also include the risk of contracting Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) such as Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Genital Herpes, Genital Warts, Syphilis, Hepatitis B, Crabs and even Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) by indulging in premarital sex.

She again indicated that the assembly was set to offer helping hand to victims of teenage pregnancy by ways of registering them on various skilled programmes to ensure they do not rust away but rather become very useful to the society and the country as a whole.
