The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Denkyembour in the Eastern Region, Mr Seth Birikorang Ofosu, has encouraged local people to get tested for HIV as national rates continue to rise.

A recent statistics by the National AIDs commission revealed that new HIV infections in country rose by 70.15 percent in the 2016 alone.

According to figures by the commission, HIV infected persons increased from 12,000 in 2015 to 20,418 in 2016.

Mr. Birikorang, who expressed worry on the current trend when addressing a group of audience at the National AIDS day celebration in the area therefore, appealed to the people to go get tested since that was the only means to know one’s status.

He said the sooner they get tested, the sooner they can access treatments and advise to help manage the infection, should one test positive for HIV.He pledged support by his office to persons already living with the infection, so they do not feel neglected in the society.

He stated that the assembly is working relentlessly to strengthening the National AIDS Program (NAP) and its support groups as part of efforts to help reduce the rate of HIV cases in the district.

He called on private individuals and cooperate entities to support the Assembly in the fight against the infection.
