Chairman on the Committee of Health and Member of Parliament (MP) Berekum East, Dr
Kwabena Twum-Nuamah is advocating for more resources and attention to be devoted towards
preventing cancer in the Country.
According to the Health Committee chairman childhood cancer should be a priority since they
are the future of the Country.
And noted that the only place where cancer can be treated among children in the Country is
Korle Bu and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
He called on government to ensure that the two other teaching hospital in Cape Coast and
Tamale Teaching Hospital are all well equipped to provide childhood cancer treatment care, in a
statement on the floor of the House to commemorate the global world cancer day.
He further called for enforcement of ban on public smoking which is a risk factor and cause of
lung cancer and discourage the harmful use of alcohol.
Dr Twum-Nuamah called for taking of diets that are rich in vegetables, taking of fruits and
regular exercise to reduce the risk associated wit cancer.
“Ghanaians should take up regular medical check-ups to ensure early diagnosis of any cancer
and other disease conditions”.
We need to make a firm decision on whether to include vaccination against Human Papilloma
Virus(HPV) in young girls which causes Cervical Cancer as our national immunization
programme, which is estimated to cause a leading death among Women in Ghana he said.
