The Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives, Ghana (UPNMG), has outlined policies and measures to construct a 170-bed specialist hospital and College of Health.
The proposed 170-bed capacity hospital will be strategically situated along the Nsawam-Kumasi Highway, and it is expected to create additional income streams for the union and provide employment opportunities for members of the union.
It will be strategically located on the Nsawam-Kumasi Highway to serve as a point of emergency facility for accident victims, as the stretch is known to be prone to accidents.
UPNMG, at its 2023 4th Quarter National Council Meeting in Kyebi in the Eastern Region, indicated that it is the resolve of members that the hospital and college, when completed, will follow the successes of the Union Mart, which became a financially autonomous business after three years in operation.
Among the objectives the union seeks to achieve with the hospitals establishment are income diversification, employment avenues for nurses and midwives, enhanced visibility for the union, recognition as a leader in specialized care, and addressing the urgent need for healthcare facilities in accident hotspots.
Members of the National Council of the union visited the proposed site and interacted with the media afterwards, pledging transparency and broader stakeholder engagement to realize the successful completion of the project.
The Union also pledged to keep engaging with members to improve their welfare by implementing a loan scheme, land acquisition scheme, insurance packages, and a host of other welfare schemes to empower them.
