The Ghana Health Service has announced the outbreak of Dengue, a viral infection that spreads from mosquitoes to people in some parts of the Eastern Region.
The Ghana Health Service in a release on July 14, 2024 noted that the National Surveillance System detected unusual cases of malaria-like illness in some districts of the Eastern Region. These cases were not responding to recommended antimalarial treatment regimens and were therefore, managed as acute febrile illness.
However, a test on samples from patients by the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) confirmed nine (9) of such cases as Dengue.
The cases are being managed as non-severe cases at home, the statement added.
“Following this development, a team from the national level made up of Entomologists and Epidemiologists have joined the regional team to undertake a detailed outbreak investigation”.
